accepting sustenance

 by Alanna

She cried and cried. I felt full but couldn't seem to help her. I tried all the feelings. Anger, worry, fear, sorrow. In the moment it felt so huge, this desire to nurture this little person from my own body. Her refusal. (Oh, that my people would listen to me) How could I take care of her if she wouldn't accept sustenance? What did she need?

Later I recognized my own need. To pray. To surrender. To look up and remember the gospel and that Jesus was alive, here present, wanting to help us both. Why did I forget to ask? Next to her bed in the dark as she slept, just whispering "help" would have been enough. (But he would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.)

As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remember that we are dust.
